Treating Your Transmission Correctly

There are dozens of parts in your car’s engine that are essential to keeping it running efficiently, but what good are they if they aren’t being maintained properly? Your transmission is one of the most important parts of your engine and without it being functional you won’t be able to put your car in drive, park, neutral, or reverse. If you feel as if your transmission is going out, here are some warning signs that indicate it might be time to bring your car into Evergreen AutoWorks.

“Check Engine” Light

One of the most obvious signs you’ll notice when your car is in need of service is the “check engine” light that comes up on your dashboard. Do not ignore this warning! It is important that you get your engine checked as soon as possible when this happens. Any number of things could be wrong with your engine, but just because the light comes on it doesn’t mean that it is your transmission. The next few warning signs listed below will be able to help you differentiate a transmission issue from other engine problems.

Transmission Fluid

To keep the gears running smoothly, transmission fluid is important to keep an eye on. At about 30,000-50,000 miles it is suggested that you bring your car in to get the fluid flushed out and replaced. Any strenuous stop-and-go driving, hauling of heavy items, and stressing your car will wear down the transmission faster. Another problem you will want to address, is if there is any leaking. This means that your fluid will drain, causing friction and the gears to wear down faster.

You can tell that your fluid has reached its limit when it has gone from a red color to a black/brown tar like substance. By getting the fluid changed when it is needed, it could save you thousands of dollars in repairs down the road for this car repair.

Changing Gears

Another sign that will make it obvious that your transmission is nearing its end, is when there’s a delay in your gears shifting. For those who drive a manual- transmission car, you have to shift gears more, compared to an automatic. Because of this, you’ll be able to notice sooner if there are any delays or rough shifts while driving. It will be obvious to anyone who is changing gears, such as from drive to park, if there is a problem with your transmission.

When experiencing any of these problems, it is safe to assume that your transmission may be in need of some TLC. When any of these issues arise, be sure to take it to Evergreen Autoworks as soon as possible for an affordable and reliable diagnosis.
